[info]open_on_sunday had the prompt "box", which made me write... Spangel?!? Let's see how many get this one.

Something From The Heart

Wolfram & Hart's entertainment division was busy before Christmas, piping music to every store and producing every Christmas special on TV. So when Spike asked for help with a gift, Lorne said:

"Nope. Uh-uh. No time. Besides, Angel's my boss. I can't help you do... that to him."

"Even if I promise not to tell him you cancelled A Very Barry Christmas?"

Lorne cringed. "You wouldn't..."

"It might slip out by accident," Spike grinned wickedly. "Unless you tell me how to give the old poof what he deserves."

"OK." Lorne sighed and handed him the box. "First, cut a hole here..."

Subject: Dr Who fic: Faces and Names
Security: Public

Greetings, mortals, I come bearing Dr Who fic! With yesterday's Who news, it seemed like the right time to post this old plotbunny. Crossed over with The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy, if that's still considered a crossover since it's canon that the Doctor has met Arthur Dent...

Title: Faces And Names
Author: Beer Good ([info]beer_good_foamy)
Rating: PG13
Fandoms: Doctor Who/Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy
Timeline: Season 1 (new Who), pre-"The Empty Child", but with spoilers for s3.
Word Count: ~1100
Characters: Nine, Rose, Mickey, surprise
Disclaimer:: The characters belong to RTD, DNA, and BBC. I make no USD, GBP or EUR off posting fic about them to LJ, FFN, ETC.
Summary: You can change your name, you can change your face, but can you change who you are? During a brief stop-over, a jealous Mickey tries to find out the Doctor's name. To Mickey's surprise, someone else already knows his name. An old antagonist turns out not to be who we think he is.

"You walk past a café, but you don't eat when you've lived too long" (David Bowie)

If we all looked the same, if we all had the same names... )

Subject: Buffy talks about the Giant Dawn thing

One of the things that have been nagging me about the Kafka!Dawn storyline is that, well, I just don't see how it could ever happen. Not the being cursed bit, but how it could progress to the point where it's at in #1 and continues to be at, unchanged, in #20 when there seems to be a very obvious solution staring everyone in the face. I actually tried to write serious Season 8 fic about Buffy and Dawn, and as with all fic, my approach was pretty simple: start out with a basic premise and then ask myself "What would character X do?" In this case, the character was Buffy. And the Buffy in my head, the one I write in fic, the one I'd like to think is at least loosely based on how she was presented in canon, refused to play along with the plot.

Since the subject keeps coming up, just for kicks, I thought I'd write down the conversation I kept having with her whenever I tried to make her follow the Season 8 story. (Check the tag for previous character interviews.)

Exclusive interview! )

[info]open_on_sunday prompt "Gather".

Saved

Justine clumsily gathers Angelus' child in her arms, flinching when she realises she almost ran him through with the knife. Then she's running for the car, juggling knife and child.

A life in her hands. A life in –

A life saved. That's what matters. Not who she killed, not whatever vampire killed her sister, not the past. Just the future. She, Daniel, the child... three lonely people making a new life together.

Her battered face hurts as she straps him into the baby seat, her hands slippery with Wesley's blood. She's got responsibility now. Human beings are so very fragile.

Yes, chapter 2 of the snow goons thing is on its way. Meanwhile, as stolen from [info]stormwreath, here are the last lines of each (non-drabble) fic I've written this year. See if you can work out (or remember) what or who each one is about... Also, put together in this order, they make for a weird story in their own right. Well, if you squint. If someone can figure out exactly what happens in it, feel free to tell me.

ETA: Sorry, missed a few.

You know, I was watching Doctor Horrible again, and it struck me... Joss is nothing if not consistent. Maybe not always in characterisation, but definitely in themes. So I was going to write something on the similarities between Season 8 and Doctor Horrible, but I figured it would be more fun to do it in the form of... motivational posters! Some making half-serious points, others... perhaps not so much.

Spoilery for both series and not dial-up friendly... are people still on dial-up? Anyone? Anywhere?

...I meant 'Gandhi'. )

Subject: Fic: The Return of the Son of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons (1/?)
Security: Public

So here's this year's holiday fic – and as promised, it's a multi-parter! The basic setting of this is one of my more tenacious plot bunnies. I've done this as drama, I've done it as fluff with impending doom, and now I'm going to try and put a completely different spin on it and do it as action comedy. Let's see what happens, shall we?

Title: The Return of the Son of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons
Author: Beer Good ([info]beer_good_foamy)
Rating: PG13
Fandom/timeline: Buffy, s3: "Amends". Except Dawn is in it.
Word Count: ~1500 (this chapter)
Characters: Buffy, Faith, Joyce, Dawn. Canon pairings and crushes alluded to, but so far not explored.
Disclaimer:: The characters belong to Joss, yada yada.
Summary: It's Christmas in Sunnydale, Angel has been talked down from the hill and awww, isn't all that snow pretty. That can't be a bad thing, can it? I mean, this is Sunnydale, where the supernatural is always helpful and it's not like magical snow instantly covering the entire town could possibly herald the arrival of... FLESH-EATING ZOMBIE SNOWMEN?!?

Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say
He was made of snow
But the children know
How he came to life one day.

A week or so ago [info]stormwreath revealed that the first actual photographs of an extra-solar planet orbiting the star Fomalhaut are clearly pictures of the Great Old One Cthugha. No kidding. It's canon: You have before you the clear inference that Cthuhga has his abode on Fomalhaut which twenty-seven light years away, and that, if this chant is thrice repeated when Fomalhaul has risen, Cthugha will appear to somehow render this place no longer habitable by man or outside society.

So just when we thought it couldn't get worse... [info]jessicamelusine posts this video from 2,500 metres down which is just too freaky for words. Anyone think this guy looks familiar?

"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn"... well, with strange eons even death may die, and this one ain't restin'. I knew offshore drilling was a bad idea.

So I guess it's just a matter of which one of them gets here first, then. Either way, we're pretty much screwed. Unless we can get them on Celebrity Deathmatch or something.

Also, for [info]open_on_sunday's challenge "Remember" (which made me want to write Dawn/Dana, but seriously, that pairing name would be way too confusing), here's drabblage:

User Profile

Reality brings back ancient memories in disconnected flashes.

The wooden cage rocking gently when it's lifted, like the ship to Virginia. (How old was she? Was her family with her?)

Vegetables and cooked meat. (Were the tomatoes this big? Was she always this hungry?)

Powerful men who want something from her. (Damn her? Save her?)

They let her out after dark. (Is sunlight dangerous?)

"Make him a monster again," they say. "Haunt his dreams." (Is that her, haunting her own?)

Everything reminds Darla of what she was. There's barely enough reality at Wolfram & Hart to tell her who she is.

Well, the holiday is over, so let's see what some people did for Halloween. I did have an idea for a T:TSCC fic (which would be my first) involving Cameron answering the door and being thoroughly confused by the idea of trick-or-treating, but I decided to stick with what I know for now. Three drabbles and two ficlets on a theme. None of them is exactly of the happy sort, sorry.

Nominated:

Title: Why Are You Wearing That Stupid Human Suit? Five Halloween Costumes
Author: Beer Good ([info]beer_good_foamy)
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 1100 (100+100+100+300+500, that spells M-O-O-N)
Characters: Faith, Fred, Snyder, Wood, Lindsey
Disclaimer: Joss is a nummy treat.
Summary: Five times five people got dressed up. Or didn't. The length of the title is dedicated to [info]xlivvielockex. :-)

Two completely off-topic drabbles from someone who feels like he ought to know better; one slightly cynical and one slightly less so. Pick one. Good luck, everyone.

Smile And Grin At The Change All Around

Roger and Pedro snuck a break from work every morning around 10 to wash their hands and have coffee (black, naturally). Most mornings they'd talk about sports, but not today.

"So... what do you think of the new CEO?"

Pedro shrugged. "Dunno, man. Heard a lot of good about him, but I'll believe it when I see it."

"But just look at his track record!..."

The discussion went on until Mr Keith walked in. "Hey! Who told you two to stop sacrificing goats?"

"Uh... nobody, sir."

"Then get back to work. Mr Angel isn't paying you to run Wolfram & Hart."

The Tide Is Turning

After Sunnydale, they'd discussed old Council methods for "recruiting" Slayers. Giles told them about deception, blackmail, kidnapping, parents mysteriously disappearing... making girls do things they don't want to do. That was the old ways. They'd never do that, obviously. But... changing the world can be hard, right?

Then the new Slayers started volunteering. One by one, dozens, thousands;

"Superpowers? Yay!"

"Save the world? About time."

"Just try and stop us."

Buffy occasionally groans that she's the leader and shouldn't have to work this hard just to keep up. When Giles points out that nobody's making her do it, she smiles.

Jitters

4AM. Five hours before the Slayer Academy opens, Robin finds Faith drinking beer in the kitchen. He grabs two more from the fridge, sits down and waits.

"Last time I set foot in a classroom I was 15," she says finally. "B's insane."

"You're a fight instructor. I don't think she's expecting you to teach algebra."

"Yeah, but... Me as an authority figure? I'm not sure I can even spell 'unqualified'."

"I once hired Buffy to counsel kids with emotional problems."

Faith frowns. "Huh."

"Most of them survived, too." He takes another sip. "Are you coming back to bed?"

"Yeah."
